What is chemistry? The essence of the profession

 As a natural science, chemistry is a part of humanity's spiritual and material culture. Chemical education is an integral part of the general culture of a person who lives, studies, works, and creates in the conditions of using high technologies. The latest materials are forced to face environmental risks and are exposed to various information influences. Chemical knowledge creates the basis for a realistic attitude to the surrounding world, in which the interaction of man and matter occupies a significant place and contributes to the disclosure of the secrets of living things through knowledge of the life processes of organisms at the molecularar level.

The task of chemistry is the study of the properties of elements and chemical compounds, the study of the dependence of the properties of substances on their composition and structure, the study of the conditions for the transformation of one sense into another, the distribution of chemical substances in nature, the technologies of their production, the mechanisms of the interaction of chemical compounds, as well as the practical use of chemical processes. The content of the OP "Applied Chemistry" preserves the time-tested essential core necessary for the education and development of the acquirer; reveals the general cultural, humanistic character of natural and scientific knowledge; is based on the leading philosophical ideas of natural science, such as:

The profession of a chemist is engaging, creative, promising, and relevant now! Specialists - chemists can work in laboratories, chemical enterprises and medical institutions in perfumery, pharmaceutical and food production. Chemistry specialists can be divided into theoreticians and practitioners. Theoreticians develop the science of chemistry, invent new materials, and practitioners implement new production technologies and monitor their compliance.

To make it more transparent, here is a list of the main areas that students study:

  • recognizability of the material world;
  • discreteness of matter; 
  • hierarchy of levels of structural organisation of matter;
  • material unity of the world;
  • causal relationships in nature;
  • the importance of natural sciences for solving problems of sustainable human development.

The "Applied Chemistry" program, bachelor's level, is based on well-known scientific results, taking into account the current state of chemistry and its applied tasks, and focuses on actual specialisations within which a further professional and scientific career is possible: chemical analysis of substances/materials, thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of physical and chemical processes, synthesis of substances and materials—emphasis on the ability to provide activity in the process of experimental and theoretical chemistry.

 In production, a chemist can act as an engineer, technologist, or quality control specialist (analyst).

Quality control analysts examine the quality of the company's raw materials and finished products (medicines, building materials, cosmetics, etc.). If a defect is detected, the technologist discovers the reasons and decides how they can be eliminated. In addition, a chemist can teach at a school, university, or college.

 The profession of a chemist requires an interest in this science, an analytical mindset, the ability to systematise data, a tendency to painstaking work, and curiosity.

The "Applied Chemistry" program was developed by the mission and strategy of the university and is aimed at graduates mastering (achieving) the system of knowledge of the fundamental laws and theories of chemistry, properties of chemical elements and their compounds, and modern methods of synthesis and analysis of materials. For the first time, such OP was implemented in Ukraine's leading higher educational institution in the Sumy region to meet the personnel needs of both large and small chemical industries. In today's conditions, local productions of PJSC Khimprom, LLC Kusum Pharm, LLC VP POLISAN, SE Sumystandartmetrologiya and others are waiting for new qualified personnel.

Therefore, the development and implementation of the educational program are aimed at meeting the region's needs for qualified chemists.

At the end of the study of chemistry at the higher school, the applicant must learn the leading ideas of chemical science, value attitudes and have experience of their application in his activities, which together provide preparation for the Bachelor's level and create the basis for further study of chemistry in the master's and doctoral studies, socialisation and creative self-realisation of the individual .

 Assessments, exams and duration of study may differ in different universities. For example, at Sumy State University, education lasts four years, after which the student receives a bachelor's degree. Several pedagogical experiments are being implemented based on the TPH department: models of mixed learning using the Unified educational platform distance courses. Students perform laboratory work during studies with software, VR technologies, and other technical means. They also simulate an experiment and carry it out on laboratory chemical equipment. Students undergo practice in natural conditions - at pharmaceutical and paint enterprises, both privately and state-owned, which allows them to familiarise themselves with both domestic Ukrainian legislation and certification, standardisation, and European international standards (EU GMP / GLP, DSTU ISO/IEC 17025:2006, ISO/IEC 17025:2017)

 During the war, the demand for chemical specialists remains high: chemical products are included in the primary consumer basket, we cannot imagine our lives without them, and there is also a need for them at the front - hemostatic drugs, pocket heaters, self-heating bags with dry solder, volumes and consumption of flammable substances for mini-charges of drones and quadcopters, etc. Today, it is essential to work hard and economically, increase the efficiency of chemical production, and develop new substances and their new properties.
