On March 24, the Faculty of Technical Systems and Energy-Efficient Technologies of Sumy State University held a scientific and technical exhibition in the format of an Open Day for school and college graduates. The event combined interactive locations, modern developments of the departments and practical demonstrations, which allowed applicants to look into the world of engineering and become a part of it.
This year, each department presented its educational programs through practical cases and research. Visitors were offered interactive routes “A Car through the Eyes of an Engineer” and “A House through the Eyes of an Engineer”. Following them, participants passed thematic locations, got acquainted with the tasks of various specialties and saw how knowledge forms real technical solutions. For completing tasks, schoolchildren received symbolic currency, which they could exchange for souvenir products of the faculty.
The Department of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry presented a number of demonstrations:
- Eco-chemistry and Recycling. Study of the chemical structure of polymers and the principles of their processing. Demonstration of recycling intermediate products (flex, granules, threads). Master class on household plastic sorting.
- Water quality monitoring laboratory. Expertise on drinking water quality. Comparative analysis of the salt content of tap, filtered and mineral water. Discussion of the impact of mineralization on human health.
- Household chemistry in colors. Research on the acid-base balance (pH) of everyday products. Conducting express tests using a natural indicator - anthocyanins of red cabbage.
- At the location, visitors could get into the world of chemistry from a real experiment with color reactions to understanding chemical processes through interactive visualizations in Labster and ChemSketch.
Anna NESTHA, the executive secretary of the admissions committee of the TeSET faculty, noted: «Today, the TeSET faculty is holding such a large-scale exhibition of its research for the first time. 8 departments presented their latest scientific achievements and innovations in the field of technology, environmental safety, energy saving. We have 12 educational programs, among which, by the way, there is a new one - "Chemical Engineering", all of them prepared their locations to interest applicants. Therefore, schoolchildren and college students were waiting for various locations and props with which participants can interact: print 3D models, conduct various laboratory studies, scan details. And you can clearly see how our specialties surround everyone every day and everywhere. The TeSET faculty is a unique community of scientists, teachers, students who are happy to introduce everyone to the latest innovations in technology and science and to teach various technologies that make our lives simple and safe in an accessible and interesting way».
The event became an example of how modern education combines science, technology and interactive, opening up the real world of engineering professions to future applicants.
